How to install it
On a Mac
- Download the .dmg, then open it.
- Drag icanwrite into your Applications folder.
- Launch it and open the folder your .md files are already in.
It has to live in Applications — macOS refuses to let an app update itself from anywhere else.
On Windows

The warnings appear because the installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows doesn't recognise it — not because anything is wrong with the file. It installs for your account only, and updates itself from then on.
Linux and other computers
There's no Linux app — but icanwrite runs right in your browser on any computer. Use Chrome or Edge.
Questions about the desktop app
No. In the browser, icanwrite needs Chrome, Edge or another Chromium browser, because editing files in a folder on your own disk relies on a feature Firefox and Safari never adopted. The desktop app brings that engine with it, so it works the same whatever your usual browser is.
Yes. Downloading the app and writing in it costs nothing and needs no account. You only sign in when you want the AI features.
Exactly where they already are. icanwrite opens a folder of .md files on your computer and edits those files in place — there is no library to import into and no copy kept on our servers. Text is only sent anywhere when you ask for AI feedback on it.
Yes. It checks for a new version when it launches and every few hours after that, then offers to restart. On a Mac, keep it in your Applications folder — macOS refuses to let an app update itself from anywhere else. On Windows there is nothing to do: it updates in place.
If your Mac is on macOS 12 (Monterey) or later, yes. The download is a universal build, so it runs natively on both Apple silicon and older Intel Macs — there is no separate version to choose between.
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit — yes. ARM PCs need Windows 11, which runs the app through its built-in emulation.
The installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows a warning for apps it hasn't seen much of. Click More info, then Run anyway. It installs for your account only, so it never asks for an administrator password.
Full offline support is coming soon. When it's ready, the desktop app will only need internet for AI checks.
On Linux? icanwrite also runs in Chrome or Edge on any computer
